Things to see in the Salzkammergut
Your excursion in Salzburg, Upper Austria and Styria
Three Austrian provinces and eight regions contribute to the Salzkammergut's status as one of the most beautiful locations in Austria. The four-star Hotel DAS Hintersee and Gasthof Hintersee are located in the unique Fuschlsee region. The combination of mountains and lakes, ski areas and cultural opportunities makes this region an extremely popular destination for travellers seeking an active holiday.
We provide details of the best destinations in the Salzkammergut, not to mention touring skis and electric mountain bikes, for your visit.
Forest-Water-Magic – Hintersee
This unique loop walk near the hotel describes the history of our town and the flora and fauna of the region. Immerse yourself in the mystical "world of giant trees" and enjoy a refreshing dip in the Tiefenbach – a stream that is equally popular with locals and holiday visitors, and the perfect place for a Kneipp cure.
The Salzburg Open Air Museum in Grossgmain: the largest museum in Salzburg province
The Salzburg Open Air Museum in Grossgmain, at the foot of the Untersberg, offers a fifty-hectare journey through the past 600 years.
Discover the agricultural, craft, rural and industrial practices of our ancestors. The museum railway takes you through more than 100 reconstructed original buildings, from general stores and private residences to stables and barns.
The Eisriesenwelt cave in Werfen
Unique, colossal and a magnificent natural spectacle: the Eisriesenwelt in Werfen is the largest ice cave in the world. Sturdy shoes and warm clothing are recommended for a visit to the ice cave in Werfen. Temperatures in the Eisriesenwelt usually remain below 0°C, even in summer. The cave in Werfen is around one hour's drive from your holiday home in Hintersee.
The Salzkammergut lake tour
Explore the loveliest lakes in the Salzkammergut region with your group. The first stop is, of course, our very own Hintersee – just a hop, skip and a jump from the hotel. The next lake on the list is the brilliant, turquoise Fuschlsee – one of the cleanest lakes in the Salzkammergut and the entire province of Salzburg. At the Wolfgangsee, the tour includes a 75-minute boat ride from St. Gilgen to Strobl. A bus will take you from there to Bad Ischl, where the imperial city (Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth chose Bad Ischl as their favourite holiday destination) features a winning combination of culture, shopping fun and tradition. Make sure you taste the famous Zaunerstollen at the Zauner confectionery shop before you return to your hotel, the DAS Hintersee.
This tour is the perfect choice for bus travellers, but we will also be happy to provide more details and directions for individual travellers wishing to explore the beautiful lakes of the region.
Schloss Hellbrunn and its water fountains
Schloss Hellbrunn has been creating wet but happy faces for more than 400 years. The Hellbrunn fountains are truly spectacular, with mysterious grottoes, water-driven moving figures and mischievous water jets in plenty. Treat yourself to a journey back to the time of the prince-archbishop Markus Sittikus, who had the Hellbrunn castle and grounds constructed as a place for recreation and enjoyment.
What else is there to see in the Salzkammergut region?
The Salzkammergut has plenty more features for you to explore. Canyoning, summer toboggan rides and Alpine meadow hikes – whatever you fancy, we offer (almost) anything. We would be happy to provide more information on our attractive holiday rates.
We can supply a hiking rucksack for all your excursions during your stay. You can also fill up a sturdy, sustainable water bottle at the hotel every morning, to keep you hydrated throughout the day.
